Bobbles Beanie FREE Crochet Pattern

Last month Lionbrand announced that they would be teaming up with Stomp Out Bullying (the leading national anti-bullying and cyberbullying organization for kids and teens in the U.S.). Their goal is to increase awareness on the impact bullying has on children and teens by rallying together and making blue hats to wear proudly through October -- Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. Having some personal experiences and now having a young school-aged daughter, I know first-hand how words can really affect our kids. From the moment I first heard about this project, I knew I wanted to help make a difference! So, I grabbed some of my favorite blue yarn and came up with this new design. I even made another one in Rainbow colors and decided to share the pattern with you guys!

There's still time to join in! Craft a blue beanie with my 'Bobbles Beanie' crochet pattern and gift it to a special child in your life ..or wear it in October to support Lionbrand's new campaign "Hat NOT Hate" and help us spread the love!

Here is the FREE crochet pattern for the Bobbles Beanie!

MATERIALS:
1 skein of a heavier worsted weight yarn (under 240 yds.)
I used a skein of my hand-dyed SW Merino Singles yarn in Rainbow Speckles.
Size J (6mm) crochet hook
Yarn needle & scissors

FINISHED SIZE:
Measures approx. 20" wide x 8.5" tall

GAUGE: 8 sts. and 6 rows = 2"

ABBREVIATIONS:
C = chain
Sts = stitches
SC = single crochet
HDC FP = half double crochet in the FRONT post
HDC BP = half double crochet in the BACK post

HOW TO MAKE A MINI BOBBLE - Insert your hook into the stitch. Yarn over, draw up a loop. With 2 loops still remaining on your hook, chain 3 stitches. (Yarn over, draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw up a loop. Yarn over, draw up a loop.) Once the C3 is done, yarn over one last time and pull through those last two loops remaining on your hook.

PATTERN:
NOTE: Your C2 at the beginning of each row, always counts as your first stitch.

Row 1. C10, turn. HDC in the 3rd stitch from your hook - 8x across. (9 HDCs)

Row 2. C2, turn. HDC FP in each stitch across 7x. HDC in the last stitch. (9 sts. total)
Row 3. C2, turn. HDC BP in each stitch across 7x. HDC in the last stitch. (9 sts. total)
Row 4. C2, turn. HDC in each stitch across. HDC in the last stitch. (9 HDCs)

Row 5. C2, turn. HDC BP in each stitch across 7x. HDC in the last stitch. (9 sts. total)
Row 6. C2, turn. HDC FP in each stitch across 7x. HDC in the last stitch. (9 sts. total)

Row 7. C2, turn. HDC in each stitch across. HDC in the last stitch. (9 HDCS)

Continue repeating Rows 2 through 7 until you've reached a width of 20". (Please NOTE: I did eight full repeats and ended with one final repeat of Rows 2 and 3 ONLY -- this will create a neat and more even look right at the seam.)

TO CONNECT YOUR BRIM:
First, fold your brim in half (inside-out) with the ridges facing in. C1, SC across both ends of the brim -- connecting the two of them together. Once it is connected, flip your brim "right-side-out" -- but DO NOT FASTEN OFF HERE.

Now, moving on to the first row of your hat:

C1, turn. SC around the top edge of your brim - 60x. Join to first C1. (61 sts. total with C1)

Row 1. C1, SC in the next stitch, *mini bobble in the next st., then SC once in each of the next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around to the end of the row -- ending with 2 SCs. Join with a slip stitch in the top of your beginning C1.

Row 2. C1, SC in the next 3 sts., *mini bobble in next st., then SC once in each of the next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around to the end of the row -- ending with a bobble. Join with a slip stitch in the top of your beginning C1.

Row 3. C1, SC in the next stitch, *mini bobble in the next st., then SC once in each of the next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around to the end of the row -- ending with 2 SCs. Join with a slip stitch in the top of your beginning C1.

Row 4. C1, SC in the next 3 sts., *mini bobble in the next st., then SC once in each of the next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around to the end of the row -- ending with a bobble. Join with a slip stitch in the top of your beginning C1.

Row 5. C1, SC in the next stitch, *mini bobble in the next st., then SC once in each of the next 3 sts.* Repeat from * to * around to the end of the row -- ending with 2 SCs. Join with a slip stitch in the top of your beginning C1.

Continue repeating Row 4 and 5 until you've reached 22 rows of bobbles.
Fasten off here, leaving a long tail for sewing up and cinching the top of your hat together.

Flip your hat inside-out. Weave the string through the top stitches of your hat - in and out - through every other stitch  the top of the hat. Now, pull tight and knot it in place. Fasten off and tuck in your ends.

Now, flip your beanie "right-side" out and add a fluffy faux fur pom pom to top it off!

Congrats! You've made the "Bobbles Beanie"!

    1. I haven't worked with Unfortgettable in a while.. so I'm not 100% sure.. but I would go for a yarn on the heavier side of worsted.. something like Wool-ease, Vanna's Choice, or maybe even Scarfie..
